Happy Fat Tuesday

Lent begins this Wednesday, March 1st with Ash Wednesday. How about a quick link about Lent. It last for 40 days (minus the Sundays) and this year ends with Easter on April 16th. Typically people give up some item during lent. People have given up pop, beer, fast food, choclate, or a number of other items during Lent.

In preperation for Lent there is a tradition called Fat Tuesday in which the kitchen is cleared of fatening foods in preperation for fasting during lent. One tradition that occures as a result of this is the making of Paczki.

I have been going to Roma Bakery in Lansing for years and bringing in Paczki for people at work. It is one of the big sources for Paczki in the Lansing area per this LSJ article from last year.

I love baverian creme but there are all kinds of different fillings. This year I think I have to try sweet ricotta cheese-filled paczki. These are so heavy and filled with so many calories that I can only eat one and I really should not even do that.

Of course Fat Tuesday is also the ending of a Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans with Mardi Gras day itself falling on Fat Tuesday. I did visit New Orleans once in 1980 but have never been there at Mardi Gras time. That could be interesting some day.

I changed my mind. What's New Orleans like this time of year? Mardi Gras, woooooo! Ha ha ha ha ha! Hoo hoo hoo! Whoooohoo! Look, Meryl! Same road, no cars. It's magic! Hahaha! --The Truman Show

Satri, I can not even imagine eating 3 of them. I have hade two a few times but wow. Today I had a rasberry one which I am not a big fan of but it turned out fine. I was hoping for Ricotta. Now you are reminding me that I need to find some recipies that I can make and bring home some of my Polish heritage. Nothing real hard however, I have seen how hard some of the Moms and Gradmas work.

Sign Gurl, I got two dozen this morning. Some baverian, Chocolate, Lemon, Rasberry, Apple, and Ricotta. Everyone seemed happy. I even had one and I was not planning on it.

Hey Peety, fasting tomorrow followed by diet so I will be joining you soon enough. I hope your diet is going well. By the way, see food diet BAD!

Those look tasty! Ya know the bad part about Lent to me is, you gotta give up something you really like. It would be so much easier if I could give up say, brussel sprouts.

Rat, I managed to keep mine to one. Now they are pretty good but I still want to try one from Hamtramck. Maybe next year. You will feel better soon.

Crabby, if that is the case I give up liver. I did leave out that what you are giving up is something you really like. Shame on me!

It is intersting how this started in Poland and has spread all over the place, including South Africa. Welcome back Wenchy.

I'm not sure how I feel about Mardi Gras yet. I'm torn.

But it looked fun on the news. <----Man that makes me look old.

Had some paczki today! Wanted King cake but no. Gave out beads to co workers today. Still sad about the whole thing, knowing I SHOULD be there.....

Welcome Karen. I hope you helped the average. I still only had one. We can't have that.

KB I have been down there in October (1980) I think and I was not sure what I thought of the city. Part of it I loved but the area that most likely is where the parades are in I was not thrilled about. Since then I have gotten a lot more used to a big city and I would so love to give Mardi Gras a try.

Sabatkes, I forgot you were a trasplanted N'Orleans person. This year I saw what King cake was. I did not know it even existed. My friend in Kentucky was making one this year complete was a baby Jesus. Hey, next year save some beads for me!

Come on! You only ate one? I had some left over from Roma's and ate two this morning. They weren't as good as I remembered so why did I eat them. I dunno.

I knew they were not real good for me being diabetic so I settled on just one. Origionally I was going to skip it this year so you see I was bad after all.

Next year I am half tempted to do a taste test with some from Meijer, Kroger, Quality Dairy, and Roma and see what people think.

Deb, just like they say it is 5:00 pm somewhere to justify being able to drink, it must have been yesterday somewhere, right? If not, hey you lost at least a day when you two were really sick around your birthday so that would account for the day. (I tried)
